History of Coaching
With all of the training programs available to individuals and
organizations one would hope that sustained changes in performance
and motivation would be obtained. With the pressures of our days and
time consuming projects, focus is often diminished quite quickly
after experiencing the feeling of motivation and commitment that a
training program or seminar might bring. Statistics show that 67% of
what we learn is forgotten in a day, 80% in a week and 97% in 2
weeks! How could these numbers be improved upon?
It was out of a desire to create lasting change that the coaching
profession was born. Coaching provides continuous support and
movement in an individual's life in order to sustain change and
growth. Laura Whitworth and Thomas Leonard, two of the founding
individuals in the coaching world, created a system to support
people in every area of their lives. As a team, they developed
philosophies and methods and skills that became the core of the
industry. The Coaches Training
Institute (CTI), a highly experiential and wonderful training
program, was founded in 1992 by Laura Whitworth, Henry Kimsey-House
and Karen Kimsey-House. Coach U,
another well respected program with an emphasis on tele-course
training, was founded in 1992 by Thomas Leonard. Both programs are
two of the most respected coach training schools in the world!
The coaching profession is relatively young in comparison to
other industries. However it is growing quickly! The industry
has increased dramatically over the past 12 years in terms of
trained coaches, clients and formalized industry standards and
training.
There are over 120 coach training programs in the world, of these
24 are accredited by the International Coaches Federation: accredited
training programs and schools.
